Mask sensitive areas

Black out visual regions before the screenshot is serialized or uploaded.

Visual example: A mask hides sensitive pixels in the copied screenshot without removing the pin comments that still describe the page.

1

Draw a mask

Press M while capture mode is active, then drag over the sensitive region. User masks are applied to the captured image before storage; remove a mistaken mask before copying.

2

Masks complement redaction

Automatic sanitization handles known sensitive DOM fields and URL parts. Manual masks cover visual content that software cannot classify reliably, such as charts, avatars, or canvas-rendered data.

3

How masks reach the stored image

Mask drawing is unavailable while a comment draft is open. A qualifying drag stores a user mask in document coordinates so it follows page scroll, and clicking that overlay removes it. Automatic field boxes from the privacy scan are combined with those user rectangles before copy.

The combined regions travel with the capture message so they are painted onto the screenshot before clipboard or storage. Separate sanitization still redacts known secrets from URLs, field values, and pin text; masks cover pixels that those string rules cannot classify.

  • User masks use a unique id and a manual category so they can be deleted independently of automatic boxes.
  • Automatic field masks are dismissed rather than deleted, so later scans can still report the underlying field.
  • Escape leaves mask drawing without discarding the pins already placed on the page.
